Does a CEED project fulfil the practicum for Engineering students?

Does doing a CEED project during the vacation mean I'm not doing "real work" like I would if I were doing vacation employment?

Is there a lot more work involved in doing a CEED project instead of a usual final year project?

General

1) Can I do a CEED project and as well as have a scholarship?

Yes, as long as you are able to fulfil the requirements of your CEED project, and your other scholarship provider has not objections.

Site Work

2) Does a CEED project fulfil the practicum for Engineering students?

Yes. Doing a CEED project serves as doing your practicum , though you will still need to do a vacation report

3) Does doing a CEED project during the vacation mean I'm not doing "real work" like I would if I were doing vacation employment?

Topics for CEED projects are based on real problems and issues that companies need solved. When you work on your CEED project on-site, you will generally be given more responsibility than you would normally get until a year or two after graduation. Whatever the case, the problems are real and your work is taken seriously.

4) Is there a fixed period when I must do the 8 weeks during the vacation? Can I delay my start date?

It is generally preferable to do your on-site work during the summer vacation. However, if you cannot do the full 8 weeks during summer, you can negotiate an equivalent period with the client.

Studentship

5) Does receiving the Studentship payments affect my AusStudy or Youth Allowance?

Your CEED studentship is classified as income for AusStudy calculations. So it does affect your AusStudy payments. Check with Centrelink to find out exactly how it will affect your payments.

6) Is the CEED Studentship tax free?

Yes. The CEED Studentship is considered a scholarship and is tax free as long as you maintain your status as a full-time student.

Thesis

7) Will my thesis have to meet a higher standard since I have a longer time to work on it?

Theses marking generally takes into account the resources that you had available. Since you have a longer time and possibly more resources, you will probably be expected to have achieved more.

8) Is there any flexibility with the scope of the project?

When a topic for a CEED project is chosen, care is taken to ensure that there are sufficient academic challenges for CEED Scholars to achieve a good Honours grade. If during the course of a project, the academic supervisor believes it needs more academic content, additional depth can be added to the project.

Work Load

9) Is there a lot more work involved in doing a CEED project instead of a usual final year project?

The longer duration of a CEED project means you will do more work. Since you will achieve a lot during the summer vacation, there should be less pressure on you during your Honours year.

10) Do I need to submit the Profession Practicum Reports (for Engineering Students) if I'm doing a CEED Project? What about other schools and faculties?

From the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics website:

"When a student is doing a CEED Project for his final year project he is automatically credited with 8, 12 or 16 weeks work but is still required to write up a report on the work he/she has done. So that we know he/she is doing a CEED project, each student is required to fill in PP Work Certificate indicating they are doing a CEED Project. This is to be handed in with their report, as an appendix."

For other schools, please check with your school. You must meet all school requirements.
